Thinking and Learning The Art of Patience
I've been thinking. I've been doing a lot of thinking. Like many of you - watching our country being torn apart by hate, ignorance, greed, racism, fabrication..........you can find your own adjectives.
As my husband and I continue our research for moving abroad - we "attend" forums and webinars for expats-to-be. Though I feel as if I'm already an expat. I'm mentally removed from the USA. We remind ourselves we are not fleeing our home country just because of political views. This administration will not be around forever [geeze, it can't be!!] but we made a decision to move. For many reasons. Cost of living. Health care. Culture and travel. Our retirement plan was to travel - Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and Morocco. I have roots in Italy, my husband in Scotland. To have the opportunity to explore those countries and more gives us a burst of extra excitement. If not now - then when. As our adult children expressed to us. If not now........we don't want to wait around for the "then when".
We know this journey will not be an easy one. We are learning that patience is a word that must be applied. Bureaucracy, complex paperwork, long waits [this is when the word patience comes in to play] and rising housing cost make this process feel as if I'm standing at the bottom of Mt. Everest. Can I make it to the summit when I'm trying to get to base camp?! Thank goodness for the support groups and professionals that assist and guide you through the process. Extra thank goodness for having a business minded husband who understands the 29 pages of do this - have that - get this - don't forget forms. And yes, it's all going to be worth it!
As for my thinking a lot.......my hopes, prayers, fingers crossed.....is that one day my adult children will see the America they know now - become united. As a kid the city I lived in witnessed race riots. It was the 60's. As a teenager I had the opportunity to see unity in [my] city. I was proud to live in my city. My life was in my city. After many years I moved from the city I loved to another metro area where my children grew up, attended college and built their own lives. My husband and I moved again - only to realize we have not truly settled - yet.
Enjoy a cup of coffee & take an adventure! Lisa
